International School Teachers’ Lived Experiences - Exploring Internationalised Schooling in Shanghai

Abstract: This lecture explores the emerging phenomenon of internationalised schooling in China. It focuses on a group of “accidental” teachers who fell into teaching through happenstance or out of necessity. Chinese Internationalised Schools cater to an affluent Chinese middle-class, offering some form of international curriculum whilst employing host country nationals and expatriate teachers. Whilst Chinese Internationalised Schools are ubiquitous in China’s major cities, they remain under-researched. This presentation sheds light on the intriguing and emerging phenomenon of internationalised schooling in China by focusing on teachers’ lived experiences of working in Chinese Internationalised Schools with an emphasis on their negotiated intercultural teacher identities, struggles in workplace and resilience capital developed through working in an international education setting.
About the speaker: Dr. Adam Poole is director of research with the institute of impact studies, International Education Group, Beijing Foreign Studies University. He is currently leading a research project that examines the impact of a professional development course on teachers involved in international education. Dr. Poole also researches into international schooling in China and teachers’ experiences in international schools. He has published in journals such as Educational Review and Compare. His book, International School Teachers’ Lived Experiences—Examining Internationalised Schooling in Shanghai, will soon be published by Palgrave MacMillan.
