讲座摘要:

Australia’s post-colonial identity remains unable to articulate a coherent, independent positioning in relation to Asia. Between a White Australia/Cold War frame that viewed Asia with a combination of fear and suspicion to an embrace of globalisation, open regionalism and multiculturalism, no consensus has emerged, primarily due to political polarisation, entrenched cultural norms and the return of geopolitics. Australia’s economic interdependence with Asia continues to deepen and immigration has changed the composition of its society, yet its diplomatic and strategic engagement with the region swings from enthusiasm to ambivalence depending on political leadership. Whether a likely long-term Albanese era will see the development of a unifying “national interest” perspective and enhanced national agency that can manage complexity and diversity, or whether Australia will become a pawn of great power contest, between its economic interdependence with China and its strategic integration with the United States, remains the critical question for Australia’s future role in Asia. The article examines key milestones and efforts to articulate an independent Australian outlook and analyses why these have so far failed to prove sustainable. The paper concludes by evaluating future prospects for Australia’s Asia policy, considering scenarios for deepening cooperation, institutional innovation and strategic adaptation in a complex and contested region.
